The Institute has well-equipped research & production centers and complexes, R&D, production, and other divisions working in the Institute's activity areas including:

Organizational structure is enhanced subject to the progress of science and technology, change of manpower potential, and is oriented to basic activities of the Institute.

The first group of activities assumes accomplishment of government work including R&D efforts, supply of prototypes to co-operating facilities within the industrial branch, and provision of serial production of some kinds of articles designed at the Institute.

The second group of activities includes marketing, R&D, manufacture, and sale of competitive products for national economy sectors and for exportation, including on-site support.

To ensure solution of these problems, taking into account current and future customer needs, the Institute carries out fundamental and applied research, designs the components, instruments and integrated systems and equipment complexes, carries out mathematical modeling of the behavior of electric circuits and product designs in various environments. Calculations are executed to justify the effectiveness, reliability and safety of products; design documentation is prepared for prototypes and serially manufactured products. All the designed products are fabricated and tested in laboratory and field environment, and provided with author's support throughout the whole lifecycle.

VNIIA has unique computerized and general-purpose technological and testing equipment, tools and accessories, measurement and analytical instrumentation, computing machinery, and skilled personnel to create various-purpose products.

Degree of automation of all kinds of activities and of all the Institute's subdivisions continuously expands and deepens; end-to-end cycles of works are implemented starting from the design to a finished product and its testing. 3D modeling and prototyping of sophisticated items are widely applied using special machinery that allows the finished item to be fabricated within several hours,escaping such stages as design and fabrication of complicated accessories and machining.

The Institute's production shops are equipped with high-production NC equipment, automated machines, semiautomatic machines, and general-purpose machines that allow manufacturing components of any complexity starting from blanking operations and to final precision machining. Shaping of components is provided, depending on the type and hardness of material, component strength and the required working accuracy, by means of cutting, pressing, laser machining, eclectic erosion, and etc.

Most of critical parts made of metals and alloys are exposed during the process to thermal treatment in furnaces with automated temperature control in order to ensure specified mechanical properties. The most loaded parts and those of complicated geometry are subjected to thermal stabilization using both heating and cooling in special chambers.

The Institute's production shops possess equipment for deposition of galvanic, chemical, lacquer and composite anticorrosive and decorative coatings in order to protect products during their long lifetime in severe climatic conditions, and to put marking and functional letterings on the components surface.

Permanent connection techniques provided by various types of soldering and welding, such as argon-arc, laser, electron-beam, and diffusion welding are used in VNIIA's products. Equipment is available for joining heterogeneous materials in order to produce metal-to-glass and metal-ceramics components.

Most electric insulating parts are made of thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials on automated presses that are available in quantity sufficient to cover needs of both pilot and serial production at VNIIA. Casting of ceramics and glass parts has been developed.

The Institute has got unique equipment for production of high-voltage and high-current components by means of combined winding of capacitor paper, polymer films, foils, magnetic tape, and wires. Filling and impregnation processes are widely used with application of liquid and polymerizing dielectrics, plastic foams and compounds including various functional filling agents.

The semiconductor production shops are equipped with vacuum plants for depositing thin (up to nanothickness) and thick films of monomaterials and multielemental materials, and for diffusion and epitaxy processes, and etc.

Electronics is manufactured on the state-of-the-art automated machinery characterized by significant productivity margin. Stably operate computerized lines for assembly of complex electronic equipment with application of surface mounting and winding. Automatic quality control is ensured to check quality of soldering components on printed boards, as well as in-circuit testing of assembly units, and check of electrical mounting of complex electronic systems.

Prototype models and serial products are subjected to various tests to confirm their functioning under different types of effects, such as mechanical (linear acceleration, vibrations and vibroimpacts, multiple bumps and conveying load, and one-time heavy shocks) and environmental (heat, cold, moisture, solar radiation, dust, and others). Electromagnetic compatibility of manufactured equipment with conjugated electronics is verified. All test procedures are carried out using equipment of leading companies and that of in-house design.

Certification test base has been created at the Institute for testing electronics as to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), external effects and electrical safety. The test base allows EMC testing of equipment within a wide frequency range, and determining man-made radio interference emission.

The test base scope of use:

The Institute carries out works and renders services related to information security; respective research and checks of computing machinery and electronics are executed.

Research subdivisions possess continuously improved laboratory and test base, and computing machinery of adequate power. Over 1,500 complex high-accuracy measuring systems are used at the Institute, including few dozens of unique instruments designed by VNIIA's specialists and characterized by record-breaking parameters of accuracy, measurement range, and degree of measurement automation. The measurement, computation and testing systems developed provide not only the entire required range of effects on the fabricated products, simulating practically any operating conditions, but also allow processing and documenting measurement results and accumulating data in appropriate databases.

The research and design subdivisions widely use up-to-date automation systems.

Planning and control of activities of all the Institute's subdivisions are implemented using the VNIIA's Corporate Information & Management System (CIMS) based on network methods, continuously maintained labor-intensiveness standards and databases covering all types of resources, and CALS-ERP technology.

The Institute's computing base includes a number of modern servers, remote access systems and a great number of workstations linked into a number of common and local area networks.
