The Institute has well-equipped Research & Production Centers and Complexes, research & design, production and other divisions that include:
The organizational structure is changing together with the progress of science and technology, it depends on the manpower and is aimed at accomplishing the missions of the Institute.
The first group of missions includes the accomplishment of the research & design efforts from the State Armament Program and the annual State Defense Procurement Order, the shipment of the prototype models to the partner-facilities, and the serial manufacture of a number of products designed at the Institute. Another mission is to carry out the oversight of the serial manufacture at the industrial plants and the maintenance of the products during their operation in the armed forces.

The second group of missions includes marketing, research, development, design, sale and support of the non-defense products for different domestic industries and export abroad.
To accomplish these missions taking into account the current and future needs of the Customers, the Institute carries out fundamental and applied research, designs the components, instruments and integrated systems and complexes, performs mathematical modeling of the behavior of the products, circuits and devices in different environments. Calculations to justify the effectiveness, reliability and safety of the products are conducted, the design and technological documentation is prepared for the pilot models and the serially manufactured products. All the designed products are tested in the laboratory and in the field, and are maintained and supported throughout the whole lifecycle.

The products of the Institute are science-intensive and contain:
The products and devices also incorporate up-to-date materials that include:
VNIIA has the unique computerized and multi-purpose technological and testing equipment, tools and gears, measuring equipment and analytical devices, computing capabilities and qualified staff to create such kind of defense-related and non-defense products.
All types of activities and all the units of the Institute are becoming more and more automated, end-to-end working cycles are implemented from the beginning of design to the fabrication of product and its testing. The 3-D modeling and prototyping is widely used for complex components, thus allowing to fabricate a component or model within several hours by "growing" it from a special polymer and skipping the stages of design and fabrication of complicated gears and mechanical machining on the metal-cutter. This technology is capable of producing unique and complicated whole volumetric components with closed interior cavities of inhomogeneous structure that cannot be fabricated mechanically.

The Institute's production shops are equipped with the high-performance equipment with numerical program control, automatic machines, semiautomatic machines and standard machines that allow to manufacture components of any complexity starting from the blanking operations to the final precision machining. Depending on the type and hardness of the material, strength of a component and the required preciseness of machining, the components are fabricated using cutting, pressing, laser machining, eclectic erosion, etc.
To set up the mechanical properties, most of the critical parts of metals and alloys are subjected to thermal treatment in the furnace with automatic temperature mode during the process. The most loaded parts and those with complicated geometry are subjected to thermal stabilization using both heating and cooling in special chambers.

To protect the products during the whole lifetime in the hostile environment and to put the marking and functional inscriptions on the products, the Institute's production shops are equipped with the machines for galvanic, chemical, lacquer and composite coating of anti-corrosion and decorative purpose.
Our products incorporate the techniques of the permanent connection using soldering and welding of various types (argon-arc, laser, electron-beam, and diffusion).
There is equipment available for alloying heterogeneous materials to produce metal-to-glass and metal-to-ceramics parts.
The majority of the electric insulating parts are fabricated from the thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials at the numerous automatic presses that cover the needs of both pilot and serial manufacture at VNIIA. The casting and machining of ceramics is performed.
The Institute is equipped with the unique instrumentation for the fabricating of the high-voltage and high-current components using the winding of the capacitor paper, the polymer foils, the metal foil, the magnetic tape, and wires. There is a wide application of the filling and impregnation with the liquid and polymer dielectric, plastic foam and compounds with the various functional filling agents.
The semiconductor production shops are equipped with the vacuum machines for deposition of thin (nanoscale sized) and thick films of mono- and poly-element material, and the machines for diffusion, epitaxy, etc.
The electronics is manufactured at the automatic lines that have the significant productivity resource. There are sustainable automatic lines for the assembly of the complex electronic equipment using the surface mounting and winding. The monitoring of the component soldering quality on the printed boards is automatic, the in-circuit testing of the assembled units and the wiring control of the complex electronic systems are also performed.

| Equipment for the EMC certification testing of electronics | ||
The prototype models and the serial products are subjected to various tests to confirm their functioning under different types of effects, such as mechanical (linear acceleration, vibrations and vibration shock, bump, transport load, and high-intense shock) and environmental (heat, cold, humidity, solar radiation, dust, etc.). The electromagnetic compatibility of the manufactured products is verified with the mating radio-electric equipment. All these tests are carried out using the testing equipment of the leading companies or designed by the Institute.
In the Institute there is a test base for the certification tests of the electronics for the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), external effects and electrical safety. This allows us testing both the defense, and the non-defense products for the stability to the electromagnetic noise of wide frequency range, to the emission of the industrial noise, as well as to the climatic and mechanical effects.
